The Striezelmarkt in Dresden is said to be Germanys oldest Christmas Market, first mentioned in 1434.

"Striezel" comes from the old German word "Strüzel", which is a traditional cake in Germany, mainly eaten during Christmas Time. Today, this cake is called Stollen and of course you can find handmade Stollen on the Striezelmarkt!

Originally, the market only lasted one day to sell meat and other goods to the citizens before Christmas and after the traditional period of fasting during Advent.

The Christmas Market today usually opens around the First Sunday of Advent, and closes on Christmas Day. You can not only find Bratwurst and Glühwein on the Striezelmarkt, but also ornaments, Räuchermänner (smoking men), and nutcrackers to bring home as a souvenir.

It is summertime in Europe, and it is getting hot! Here are some tips to stay cool during your sightseeing tour.

1. Start your day with a nutritious breakfast. Cucumber, (water-) melon, and paprika are just a few fruits and vegetables that not only taste delicious but also contain a high percentage of water, which means they are hydrating, too. And of course, do not forget your carbs. Germany is known for its sourdough bread.

2. Carry a water bottle with you to make sure you drink enough water throughout the day. Stay hydrated! 💧

3. Start your sightseeing early. In the morning or the late afternoon, when it is not that hot, you can do some sightseeing outside. Around noon is the perfect time for inside activities like visiting churches, palaces, or museums.

4. Make sure to bring (and wear!) a hat and sunglasses. Also, it is important to apply sunscreen in the morning.

5. And of course, enjoy some cool ice cream once in a while 😊

If you have any cooling tips, feel free to share them with us in the comments!

7 interesting facts about Vienna

1. In 1752 Francis Stephen of Lorraine, by marriage part of the Habsburg dynasty, had the idea of building a zoo at Schönbrunn Palace. This zoo still exists today and is the world’s oldest operating zoo.

2. Franz Schubert, Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, to name a few composers who had such a great impact on music and Vienna, that until today Vienna is called the City of Music.

3. When the chef of Prince Metternich of Austria got sick, it was Franz Sacher’s responsibility to create a dessert. Today, this dessert might be the most famous cake: the Sacher-Torte!

4. Until 1938, horses, carriages and cars drove/ walked on the left side of the road. When Austria decided to change to right-hand traffic, they also had to adjust the rail system. This process was finished in 2012!

5. The Viennese Coffee House Culture is an intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO. The first Viennese Coffee House opened in 1685.

6. When you are sightseeing in Vienna, the Habsburg dynasty is almost everywhere. This is because they ruled Austria and many surrounding areas for more than 600 years.

7. The Snow Globe was invented in Vienna. Erwin Perzy tried to improve the lightbulb, making it brighter by adding reflective glitter into water, and placing it in front of a candle. While this invention did not work out, Snow Globes turned out to be a great souvenir!

City Highlight Budapest: Várhegy (Castle Hill)

Castle Hill (Várhegy) combines history, stunning architecture, and amazing views over the city and on the famous neo-gothic Parliament Building (Országház).

To get up the hill, do not worry: you do not have to walk! “Gallért” or “Margit” will carry you for 311 feet in a 50° angle, starting close to the Chain Bridge, Budapest’s landmark. “Gallért” and “Margit” are the passenger carts of the Buda Castle Funicular or: Sikló. In 1870 the Sikló opened for public, to ease the access to the Castle and other government buildings.

Of course, it is also possible to walk up the hill, which gives you a chance to pass over one or both pedestrian bridges crossing the funicular tracks.

You probably already admired Buda Castle (Budavári Palota) from below, and you now have a chance to stroll through the park, walk across the courtyard, and maybe visit one of the museums which are in the Castle today.

Another highlight on the Várhegy (Castle Hill) is Fisherman’s Bastion (Halászbástya), close to Buda Castle. From here you have a stunning view over the Danube on the Parliament Building and Pest.

Right at the almost bright white Fisherman’s Bastion you can find Mátyás-templom (Matthias Church), a stunning church in a neo-Gothic style.

Buda Castle Hill offers enough to fill an entire day with sightseeing. If you are planning a tour with us that includes Budapest, we will make sure you have several days here, so you have time to explore everything.

Today we are taking a stroll through Bavarias capital Munich, close to the Alps and in the heart of Europe.

Your walk starts at the Marienplatz in the center of Munich, and you can hardly miss the magnificent building: the new city hall (Neues Rathaus). It was built in 1867, and the neo-Gothic design is a homage to the Gothic era, when Munich flourished.

Make sure you see the Glockenspiel when you are there, it plays every day at 11 AM and 12 PM in the tower of the new city hall.

Close to the Marienplatz is Munich Residence. Dating back to the 14th century, numerous leaders expanded and remodeled the Residence, which today holds a museum. You can either visit the museum and marvel at the artefacts of former Kings or stroll through the Hofgarten.

On your way from the Marienplatz to Munich Residence, you might want to pass by the Dom zu Unserer Lieben Fau (Cathedral of Our Dear Lady), or Frauenkirche, and find out about the Devil’s Footstep.

Now you have some time to relax, and I have good news for you: Beer is a cultural asset in Bavaria, and Munich alone has 6 large breweries. Throughout the city you can find numerous larger and smaller beer gardens which invite you to sit down, enjoy a German beer, and try traditional food.

Happy Easter!

The Easter Bunny is a well-known tradition, but it is not certain why the bunny is a symbol of Easter. According to one story, parents tried to explain how the Easter Eggs got into the garden, and therefore they invented the very fast Easter Bunny who hides them and can vanish quickly. Maybe that is why every child is trying to catch a glimpse of the Easter Bunny each year.

Can you find all five Easter Bunnies who are strolling around Mirabell Garden, Salzburg?

Golden City, City of a Hundred Spires, Mater Urbium (mother of all cities)—all names describe one place: Prague!

A rumor says that Emperor Charles IV. gold coated the towers of Prague Castle in the 14th century, leading to the nickname “Golden City”. But most likely it comes from the bright color the walls of Prague Castle have when the sun shines on them: they shine golden.

Capitals were not very common in the Middle Ages, but when a leader chose a city for his residence, this usually led to wealth and power. Many kings and emperors chose Prague as their residence city, and over the years, Prague grew and gained cultural influence. For example, the first University in Central Europe, Charles University, was founded in 1348 in Prague.

Staré Město is the oldest part of Prague, and many sights are within the Old Town. For example, the Astronomical Clock, the Old Town Tower right at Charles Bridge, and the Clementinum, which holds the National Library of the Czech Republic.

Prague is part of many of our tours, such as our 8-Day Vienna, Prague, Berlin Rail Tour (8R01): https://to-europe.com/tour-package/tours/rail-tours/8-10-days/vienna-prague-berlin-rail-tour/
