Golden City, City of a Hundred Spires, Mater Urbium (mother of all cities)—all names describe one place: Prague!
A rumor says that Emperor Charles IV. gold coated the towers of Prague Castle in the 14th century, leading to the nickname “Golden City”. But most likely it comes from the bright color the walls of Prague Castle have when the sun shines on them: they shine golden.
Capitals were not very common in the Middle Ages, but when a leader chose a city for his residence, this usually led to wealth and power. Many kings and emperors chose Prague as their residence city, and over the years, Prague grew and gained cultural influence. For example, the first University in Central Europe, Charles University, was founded in 1348 in Prague.
Staré Město is the oldest part of Prague, and many sights are within the Old Town. For example, the Astronomical Clock, the Old Town Tower right at Charles Bridge, and the Clementinum, which holds the National Library of the Czech Republic.
