Hundreds of residents packed Coachella City Hall Tuesday night as the debate over a proposed technology campus and data center project reached a boiling point.
For more than four hours, community members voiced concerns about water usage, electrical demand, environmental impacts, transparency, and the city’s agreement with Stronghold Power Systems. Council members acknowledged they had not heard from a single resident speaking in favor of the project.
As tensions rose, Stronghold representatives addressed the council, prompting strong reactions from residents both inside the chambers and among the hundreds gathered outside. Sheriff’s deputies were eventually called in as emotions escalated and company executives were escorted from the building.
Despite the intensity of the evening, residents achieved a significant outcome. By the end of the meeting, city leaders appeared united in recognizing the community’s concerns, and Mayor Pro Tem Denise Delgado called for a moratorium on new or expanded data center approvals while the city studies potential impacts.
Whether you support or oppose the project, this meeting was a reminder that local government decisions can have a lasting impact on the future of a community—and that public participation matters.
