Check out this brittle star we found yesterday! ⭐️
‼️ FUN FACT ‼️
Brittle stars are incredibly successful. There are over 2,000 known species, making them the largest group of echinoderms (the group that includes sea stars, sea urchins, and sand dollars).

This is the Giant Murex. We found them in the seagrass while snorkeling in the bay during a Water Planet Dolphin Swim Tour. The Murex shell snail has a water tight door called the Operculum he uses to close himself in when he is out of the water or feels threatened. We always release all live shells to the habitat we find them in.
‼️FUN FACT‼️
The Romans were using some smaller spieces of Murex found in the Mediterranean to extract the historic “Tyrian Purple” dye on the Togas of their Senators.

I am incredibly honnored and excited to have been able to contribute to this historic banning of international commercial trade in endangered species including the giant manta ray. You may recall that the video we shot during a Water Planet Dolphin Tour back in July of the capture by SeaWorld of a giant manta ray off of Shell Island in Panama City went viral and triggered a worldwide reaction in the media.
" Florida (2025): Following public anger over the capture of an endangered giant manta for an aquarium, Florida's FWC suspended new permits for capturing threatened species and is revisiting policies to permanently ban such removals."
"Hawaii (2025): New rules are proposed to limit boats and visitors at popular manta feeding sites, requiring permits and safety measures to manage tourism impacts."
It is so encouraging to realize that we the people can actually promote serious and permanent changes which will make a difference in the way governments control our ocean's resources. Thank you to all those who passed on their concerns and outrage and thank you to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
for doing the right thing.

Warning: this video is disturbing and very alarming. That manta ray was feeding on small pieces of plastic in the middle of this floating pile of trash in Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve east of Honolulu. Ironically, this State Park is possibly the last coastal area on Oahu where you can still see "untouched" marine life.
Worldwide, more and more megafauna filter feeders like mantas and whale sharks feed on small pieces of plastic thinking that it is plankton. Scientists have found that the ingested plastic will release chemicals in their body, and in time, can change the animals hormones regulating growth, development and reproductive functions. It will also damage their digestive tract.
I cannot believe how far-reaching the consequences of human's irresponsible and unenforced criminal behavior have gone. Make your voice heard. Elect responsible and incorruptible representatives, who understand that the large companies are more accountable than the consumer for the discarded packaging trashing our oceans.
