The ‘style sandbag’. Awesome 5.9 crack climbing on an awesome tower. Brad Kaminski not doing half bad for some of his first real crack pitches outdoors. These esoteric climbing techniques are not very approachable at first but as they become second nature they start to feel as intuitive as grabbing a jug. This leads to the classic ‘style sandbag’, where it feels harder than the grade because you don’t have a certain crack size wired. Until the 5.9 jam becomes familiar it’s gonna feel like 5.11.

This is one of the most helpful but often underused benefits of using the climbing rope to attach to the anchor. In this stance there is a low and hard to use anchor location and a high and hard to use anchor location. BUT, it’s always possible to extend a high anchor and you can shorten a short anchor. Final moves on the epic upper ruper. Pretty wild for 5.8. Adventurous multipitch trad climbing at its finest. Epic position, gear anchors, intricate face and crack climbing.

And it’s not the backup knot. Here Joshua Climbs shows us how to create a perfect extended rappel and backup using an old Petzl PAS. The autoblock backup is a great tool to have in your back pocket, but this ain’t the really important part of this setup. I’m talking about the extended ATC. Who knows why extending the ATC away from the belay loop is such an essential technique to understand?
