Emerald Cruises christened the Emerald Astra in Amsterdam, with travel advisor Toni Lanotte-Day as godmother, highlighting her contribution to Scenic Group and travel advisors' role in the industry.

Congratulations to Steve Cates, the winner of ASTA's 2026 Community Compass Award. This award celebrates an individual from the destination where we host our Travel Advisor Conference who is doing important work to benefit the local community.

This year, we were thrilled to present the honor to a military veteran who is the co-founder of a local organization in San Diego dedicated to sharing the stories of veterans. Steve was nominated for the award by Tracy Anderson, chapter president of our ASTA San Diego chapter.

A California native, Steve entered military service in 1970, right out of high school. He served in the Navy on fast-attack submarines during both the Cold War and Vietnam War, with service throughout the Pacific region. Following his service, Steve and a fellow veteran recognized a need in their community to bring veterans and civilians together so veterans could share their stories and civilians could learn from them. This is what inspired them to found The Hoist.

Today, the organization provides veterans and civilians with opportunities to interact, reflect, and pay tribute to all who have served.

💰✈️ As part of the award, Steve was gifted by ASTA a custom-planned getaway valued up to $10K, designed by this year's ASTA Travel Advisor of the Year winner, Dr. Shenika Baisley-Woodley, who has served in the United States Army for more than 25 years and currently serves as a Deputy Commander.
