Columbia River Maritime Museum, Astoria Oregon & the Columbia River Bar

The Columbia River Maritime Museum, in Astoria Oregon, highlights the history of the Columbia river and its treacherous bar. Though still one of the most hazardous crossings, the bar is far safer, thanks to huge jetties built by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Walking through the remainder of the museum, we encounter a number of artifacts—weathered timbers, recovered cargo, and detailed models. From ancient wrecks like the Beeswax ship, to more recent disasters along the Columbia River Bar, this stretch of water tells stories of ambition, danger, and survival. Mariners faced shifting sands, violent storms, and unpredictable currents. Today, these exhibits preserve the legacy of those who navigated its waters—reminding us that every safe arrival was once hard-won. Reminiscing on the "Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature" exhibit at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City, this display highlighted a vintage needlework sampler alongside a photograph capturing the view from the Oak Bedroom to the Landing at Potter's Hill Top home, all beautifully set against a reproduction of William Morris's 1864 "Daisy" wallpaper that she selected to decorate her own space.

Let's take a look at the Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge, in Tanzania. The drive into the lodge, is quite picturesque, as we pass by acacia trees, surrounding winding stone pathways. Traditional thatched-roof rondavels, which are the hotel rooms, are tucked beautifully into the lush green landscape. And we are greeted by a musical group, welcoming us with dancing, and lively percussion rhythms. And we enjoy the sounds, and warm Tanzanian hospitality, as we admire the grounds. We are also offered a chilled towel, and cold fruit juice, while our luggage is unloaded and we are checked in. Once checked in, we are escorted to our room.
