We had an adventurous night sitting around the campfire while grilling and eating supper! A pair of geese with 6 goslings entertained us along the shore. A deer walked in along the shoreline and was going to walk under the dock until a boat on the water startled her and then she walked behind the beach shed and became curious about a raccoon that heard her walking in the grass that had climbed a tree between the beach shed and the house. The deer then ran through the yard towards the fence. The raccoon climbed down the tree and ran along the grass to the driveway. To close out the evening, one of the geese is guarding the other goose and goslings on shore below the evergreens as they bed down for the evening (look closely and you can see the glowing eye on the left of the pic). Amazing to see all this action in one night as we quietly sat around around the fire! 🔥🦌🦝

Trumpeter Swans on Big Sand Lake! So calming and peaceful to watch them gracefully swim along the shore!

Trumpeter Swans are the biggest native waterfowl, stretching up to 6 feet in length and weighing on average more than 25 pounds.

Despite their size, this once-endangered, now recovering species is as elegant as any swan, with a graceful neck and snowy-white plumage.

Trumpeter Swans form pair bonds when they are three or four years old. The pair stays together throughout the year, moving together in migratory populations. Trumpeters are assumed to mate for life, but some do switch mates over their lifetimes. Some males that lost their mates do not mate again.

Fun fact: Trumpeter Swans take an unusual approach to incubation: they warm the eggs by covering them with their webbed feet.
