A true Appalachian witch before it was “cool”, Susan Sheppard also left a legacy as an artist, author, medium, astrologist, historian and paranormal expert.
Like having a certain talent in music or athletics, some people are just born with a natural affinity for the spirit world. Growing up close to the first Mothman sightings and within a family that had a spiritual history, Susan seemed to be destined to lead a life between realms. She was born on July 1st, 1955 and recalled a childhood full of strange encounters in the years after as she became more and more well known for her paranormal work. The first time she communicated with a spirit was at just four years old.
Instead of turning from what many would consider to be “too different”, Susan embraced it. She didn’t run away - she dove deep into the history of West Virginia and listened to the stories of others. Instead of hiding her experiences for fear of being judged, she wrote detailed books and was praised for her craft. She was incredibly proud of her Delaware-Shawnee Native American lineage, as reflected in many of her stories and art pieces.
In 1996, Susan founded the internationally recognized Haunted Parkersburg Ghost Tours. The tour has been listed as one of the best in America, a well deserved accolade for her deep knowledge of history and commitment to reflecting that in her work. During her lifetime, she was featured on Scariest Places on Earth, Destination America, and many more.
After a battle with long standing health issues, Susan passed away on April 19th, 2021. A parade was held throughout the city of Parkersburg, West Virginia in her honor. The Haunted Parkersburg tours continue through the work of her beloved daughter, Scarlet - so you can still visit the places that inspired Susan, and hear her stories.
