Monongahela National Forest was established on this day… April 28, 1920.

Today, it protects some of the wildest and most beautiful country in West Virginia — from mountain overlooks and rushing streams to quiet trails deep in the Allegheny Highlands.

One of the best places to experience that forest history is Gaudineer Scenic Area, home to a rare stand of old-growth red spruce. Walking there feels like stepping into an older version of West Virginia, where towering trees, mossy ground, and cool mountain air make the forest feel almost untouched.

Discover more about the Gaudineer Scenic Area and plan your visit with our Roam Your Home article.

On October 16, 1859, abolitionist John Brown launched a bold raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry in now West Vriginia. His plan was to seize weapons, arm enslaved people, and ignite a widespread revolt to end slavery in America. Brown and his small band of followers captured the armory but were quickly surrounded by U.S. Marines led by Robert E. Lee. The raid ended in failure, and Brown was captured and later executed for treason. Still, his actions and fiery conviction shocked the nation, deepened the divide between North and South, and became a spark that helped lead to the Civil War. here are some photos from a recent trip to Harpers Ferry National Historical Park
