Why He is Considered "Welsh"

1.Geographic Evidence: Many scholars point to the village of Banwen in South Wales as his most likely home.

2.Cultural Identity: At the time (around 387 AD), he was a Romano-Briton. His first language would have been a form of Brythonic, which is the direct ancestor of the modern Welsh language.

3.The Name Connection: In Wales, he is often remembered as Padrig or Badrig. Some traditions even suggest his birth name was Maewyn Succat.

How He Ended Up in Ireland:

He only arrived in Ireland because he was kidnapped at age 16 by Irish raiders who attacked his family's estate. He spent six years as an enslaved shepherd there before escaping back to Britain, only to return later as a missionary
