It is with a heavy heart that I share the recent passing of my dear friend, Hector A. Gonzalez, the head of the legendary music label Rampart Records. Hector wasn’t just a music pioneer; he was a true friend, mentor, and an extraordinary soul who deeply touched my life. I’ll forever be grateful for the many years we spent together, filled with laughter, collaboration, and an unwavering love for music.

Hector inherited Rampart Records from Eddie Davis, the visionary behind the “West Coast Eastside Sound,” a sound that broke barriers in the 1960s. It gave a voice to young Mexican American and Black musicians from Boyle Heights and East L.A., who were often overlooked by the mainstream music industry. Rampart Records became the home of timeless hits like The Premiers' Farmer John, The Blendells' La La La La La, Cannibal and the Headhunters' Land of 1000 Dances, and El Chicano’s Viva Tirado and Whittier Blvd.

I had the privilege of meeting Hector through my good friend Martin Casillas of Mexico 68 Afrobeat Orchestra a band I was managing at the time. Our first record was with the label Rampart Records, and from that moment, Hector became not only a trusted collaborator but a close friend. We worked together on various projects—video recordings, video productions, music publishing, and much more. He was always generous in sharing his knowledge and expertise, helping me grow not only professionally but personally.

Through Hector, I also got to know his long-time business partner, Jimmy Velarde, and I can say that the friendships I’ve cherished with these incredible men are among the greatest gifts in my life.

Hector’s absence is deeply felt, and I miss him more than words can say. He was more than a colleague—he was a brother, a confidant, and someone whose passion for music and community will continue to inspire me. As we remember him today, I invite you to dive into the sounds of Rampart Records, a label that changed the cultural landscape and continues to echo the voices of a generation.

Rest in peace, Hector. Thank you for the music, the friendship, and the memories. You are truly missed.

What an incredible weekend at the 29th Central Avenue Jazz Festival! I want to send a huge shoutout to my dear friend Kevin T. Williams and his wonderful daughter, Bella, for joining us and making the Arts Pavilion even more special.

Kevin, a talented artist and musician, has contributed his talent to top-notch bands like The Bonedaddys and The Untouchables, to name a few. His presence alone added a unique rhythm and energy to the event. But it didn’t stop there—his daughter, Bella, flew all the way from New York to share her amazing talents with us! Bella is not only an accomplished artist and musician, but she’s also a brilliant fashion designer. Her art and fashion were on full display at the pavilion, showcasing the incredible creativity that runs in the family.

I’m beyond grateful to both Kevin and Bella for being such an integral part of our Arts Pavilion family. Their talents and energy truly elevated the experience for everyone. Thanks for being a part of this journey with us!

I encourage everyone to check listen to their music on any streaming platform:

🎷 Central Avenue Jazz Festival: A Personal Celebration of Community and Jazz! 🎶
Being the Arts Pavilion organizer for the 29th Central Avenue Jazz Festival is such a joy for me. This event, happening on September 21, 2024, from 11 AM to 7 PM, isn't just about music—it's about celebrating our shared history and the vibrant spirit of our community.
For over 20 years, this festival has felt like a "homecoming" for so many of us. Central Avenue holds a special place in my heart; it's where the magic of West Coast jazz began, with legends like Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday lighting up the scene.
Now, the Festival gets to honor that incredible legacy by showcasing both fresh talent and seasoned musicians across three dynamic stages, while the artists at the Arts Pavilion add their unique creativity to this vibrant celebration.
This festival really does bring us all together, across generations and backgrounds, united by the love of jazz.
I can't wait to see everyone come together to dance, sing, and celebrate the incredible culture that jazz music nurtures in our community. Let's make this year's festival unforgettable!
Save the date and join us for a day full of music, joy, and connection. See you at the 29th Central Avenue Jazz Festival! 🎉
