Buddy Guy, 1981. Bumpershoot Music Festival, Seattle.
Jimmy Velarde shot this the same year he started touring as stage support for Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Koko Taylor, and Big Mama Thornton — camera always on him, even when it wasn't the job. That's basically the whole story of his career. Trust first, camera second.
He's a 12-time Emmy winner now, Grammy-nominated, been shooting for CBS Television City since '89. But this shot is where it started — black-and-white, unposed, shot on instinct because that's the only way he ever knew how to work.
"My images were spontaneous. I was living inside the music."

Twenty bays. One tent. 17 artists on the block where Central Avenue's jazz age actually happened.
The Arts Pavilion returns to 42nd & Central for its twelfth year at the 31st Central Avenue Jazz Festival — a few steps from the Dunbar Hotel, where Billie Holiday stayed and the Club Alabam crowd spilled out onto this street.
Kenneth Gatewood is our 2026 Featured Artist. His solo exhibition The Medium of Memory is up at Arts @ Delicious inside the Historic Dunbar through September 30.

Sunday Jazz Showcase at Delicious at The Dunbar, 4229 S. Central Ave.
Rubato Elegante plays 2:30 to 4:30 PM this Sunday, August 30.
The room is currently hung with The Medium of Memory, Kenneth Gatewood's exhibition of watercolors and mixed media work, up through September 30. Music, food, and the art all in the same afternoon on Central.

Watercolor doesn't forgive mistakes. Neither does memory.
Movement II of The Medium of Memory turns away from the stage and toward the block. Kenneth Gatewood paints the neighborhood he came up in, and the medium is the whole argument — watercolor gives you one pass. No painting over a bad decision. What went down is what stays.
Three works in this movement. Purdy Gurl 2 is an original on paper. The Awakening carries 22 karat gold leaf over watercolor, three of ten in the edition. Vision Unlimited is new this year and built with JET magazine collage, a printer's proof with only two in existence.
