In 1958, Oklahoma cowboy Ben Johnson was the uncredited technical advisor for the rodeo sequences in the Mamie Van Doren Western, Born Reckless. Five years earlier Johnson had won the world team roping championship. Almost two decades later he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Last Picture Show. He is the only cowboy ever to win an Academy Award and a rodeo championship.

Some Osage County/Kentucky Derby history

This Kentucky Derby Day, we're remembering 1924, the year a horse from Osage County named Black Gold took top honors in the famous race. Owned by an Osage woman named Rosa Magnet Hoots, Black Gold’s mother Useeit was bought by Rosa’s husband Alfred Hoots in 1909. Alfred died in 1917, but not before making Rosa promise that she would try to come up with the stud fee needed to breed Useeit with the famous racehorse Black Toney.

The following year, oil was discovered on the Hoots’ land, and in 1920 Useeit was sent to Kentucky to breed with Black Toney. Black Gold was born in 1921. After winning a number of high profile races in 1923, he was admitted into the running for the 1924 Kentucky Derby as the favorite, and won by a half length at 2:05:20.
