STOP booking hotel rooms through 3rd parties such as Expedia, Booking, Priceline, etc. Yes, the low rates are enticing, but nothing is worse than the time wasted and frustration of arriving to your hotel just to find out you've been "walked."
"Walked" in hotel terms means a guest with a confirmed reservation is denied a room because the hotel is overbooked.
Imagine driving 10-12 hours or spending just as much time in airports and in the air or longer just to have to be talked with getting new accommodations. Many times guests who book through 3rd party sites are the first to get walked. Last minute bookings can definitely fall victim to this.
Here's why:
3rd party booking sites do not have access to hotel inventory. They will show you the rooms and rates but can't tell you if one is actually available. Beware that the photos they show may not be exactly what you are booking.
The overbooking comes because many people are booking through these 3rd parties and with no access to inventory, overbooking happens. Check-in is basically first come, first served.
We have seen people who booked weeks, sometimes months, in advance and arrive to have no rooms available for their check-in.
Our advice:
* If you are expecting to check-in later than checkin time, especially later in the evening, call the hotel and let them know your estimated arrival. Sometimes they will go ahead and assign a room to you in anticipation of your arrival. That communication is key.
* If by chance you are having to find new accommodations, contact the 3rd party immediately for them to facilitate the change.
* Call your favorite travel agent. Agents have access to inventory through many means. A good agent will usually do the above for you.
* Book direct. Now understand booking direct doesn't give you that hands on personalized service of an agent and you are still having to do the leg work.
So, for your future travels, take all of the above into consideration when making your arrangements.
Happy travels!
