Book from the Nook: Dr. Mary Ann Jacobs reading Berry Song by Michaela Goade
It's time for Book From The Nook! Please welcome Dr. Mary Ann Jacobs (Lumbee), Professor and Chair of the American Indian Studies Department at UNC-Pembroke, our guest reader for February.
Third Place Winner: Jacob Long
"As an artist, I find beauty in the mundane, capturing scenes that might otherwise go unnoticed. My work seeks to reveal the intrinsic artistry in everyday elements of nature, demonstrating that all of God's Creation holds inherent value and beauty. Through my art, I aim to shift perspectives and encourage a deeper appreciation for the often-overlooked details of our world."
Jacob Roland Long (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) - Star Gazers (Elk)

“Creating this art is part of my blood memory. My art is a way of honoring those before me and continuing the artistic expression they developed generations ago. I am empowered by their art. I am continuing their legacy. Their existence is alive in me.”

2024 Year in Review
We are excited to share our year-in-review video. It has been a heartwarming and rewarding reminder of all the hard work the staff puts into the museum’s programs, events, and exhibits. When you walk through the museum's doors, you should know that countless hours and labor have gone into making your experience enjoyable, meaningful, and educational.
There are four staff at the museum: Nancy Strickland Chavis (Director), Tyler Karpovich (Collections Specialist), Alicia Thomas (Curator of Education and Community Outreach), Blake Tyner (Visitor Services Specialist), and one very loyal volunteer, Benjamin Clark. Together we are a small but mighty team. As you watch the video, keep in mind that all that you have experienced and enjoyed was produced by a small team, our resources are also limited, but that has not inhibited us from sharing high-level and quality work – reflective of our communities and audiences.
At the end of the day, you are the reason why we work so hard and strive to be as resourceful as possible to uplift our Native people through history, art, and culture. Our work is mission-driven with you at the center of this work.
Once you have finished the video and feel as uplifted as we have, please consider supporting the museum with an end-of-year, tax-deductible donation. This will help the museum continue and build on the strong foundation you have helped us establish. Any amount is greatly appreciated and valued.
