Downeast Maine Coastal Retreat

Downeast Maine Coastal Retreat The Downeast Coastal Retreat is a unique vacation property located in Pembroke, Maine, part of the last undeveloped section of the US east coast.

The Downeast Coastal Retreat is a unique vacation property located in Pembroke, Maine. Unlike highly developed coastal vacation environments on the eastern seaboard, this home allows you to live on Cobscook Bay in a rural town where the residents raise their families and engage in both traditional occupations of fishing, farming, and forestry, as well as more contemporary forms of work. This porti

on of Washington County is the last stretch of relatively undeveloped Atlantic coastline in the United States. Our fully renovated farmstead property on Leighton Neck encompasses acres of field and forest, and its 450 foot shoreline provides instant access to a large bay with dramatic twenty-foot tidal changes. It offers the intense visual experience of coastal rural Maine in a way almost no other venue can provide. The house, situated on over 55 acres, offers both privacy and the ability to be part of a living coastal community. It is also close to Eastport, the easternmost city in the US, and home to maritime and artistic enterprises. The Downeast Coastal Retreat provides a comfortable place to relax with family and friends, do creative work in a quiet and aesthetic atmosphere, and serves as a base to explore the Bay and unspoiled coastal reserves and parks. You will be located in an historic maritime community that includes Passamaquoddy Bay, Cobscook Bay, the Bay of Fundy, and the Canadian islands Grand Manan, Deer Island, and Campobello--all accessible by bridge or ferry.

Eastport has a wonderful arts scene--painting, sculpture, music, film, live theater. It's a surprising gem of a town--and only 20 minutes from the Downeast Maine Coastal Retreat.

Sailing on Cobscook Bay...this was an intrepid solo sailor, quite senior. We were in a 24 foot double keel (so it can rest on the bottom at low tide) sailboat as guests. But this sailor capturerd the peaceful movement...and he managed to avoid the current of the outgoing tide.

This are views from the Bold Coast Trail, about 45 minutes from our house. You can spend a leisurely day on this trail, that has two routes--one by the ocean, and one inland. Think Acadia National Park, with no people, no pavement. It's Maine Public Reserve Land -- no fee to use.

Two kayaks are waiting for you. Explore the Pennamaquan section of Cobscook bay from our shore. Or put one on the roof of your car and launch from the town landing further down the bay. Explore the local ponds and lakes or the near shore of Passamaquoddy Bay from the Perry landing.
