Have you ever tasted a black walnut? 🐿️

Not the walnut in the grocery store- the wild, native walnut of New York, gathered from hillsides across the Finger Lakes and cracked right here in Yates County.
Black Squirrel Farms in Penn Yan is the only licensed black walnut processing facility in New York State, working with more than 100 local growers to rescue a harvest that once went to waste. Their farm stand sits right on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail at 590 State Route 14 (open Wednesdays 9AM – 2PM and Sundays 11AM – 3PM) with black walnuts, small-batch walnut oil, granola, and BBQ smoking chips you won't find anywhere else!

Want more than a taste? Book the farm's private one-bedroom Airbnb and wake up on a working walnut farm.

Take a hike (a really, really good one) 🥾

Looking for Yates County's wild side? Head for the hills- Italy Hill, that is.

Tucked along the county's western edge, Italy Hill State Forest and High Tor Wildlife Management Area are some of the quietest, wildest country in the Finger Lakes Countrysides. Follow the Bristol Hills Branch of the Finger Lakes Trail through Italy Hill's woods, where an old quarry and a tucked-away waterfall reward the climb.

Next door, High Tor's steep wooded hills and craggy gullies stretch across Italy and Middlesex toward Naples; roughly 6,800 acres of quiet wetlands, wildlife and views you earn (the best kind!). After a good rain, Conklin Gully shows off with seasonal waterfalls, and the West River makes a peaceful paddle for anyone who'd rather explore by water.

Hiking, birding, paddling, mountain biking, snowshoeing when the snow flies- it's all here, it's all free, and it's open year-round. And with fall color just around the corner, now's the time to find your new favorite trail.

New on the blog: inside the mill that's been running since George Washington was president 🥞

The Birkett Mills has been milling grain in downtown Penn Yan, NY, since 1797; and it's a big reason Penn Yan is known as the Buckwheat Capital of America.

In our new Q&A, Kyle Gifford of The Birkett Mills answers the questions visitors always ask:
🌾 Is buckwheat really gluten-free? (Yes, it's not wheat at all. It's a seed more closely related to rhubarb.)

Keuka Harvest just opened its first-ever maze season on State Route 14A in Penn Yan- and it's three mazes in one stop!

Right now, wander the Golden Butterfly Sunflower Maze, follow the treasure hunt, meet mini Nubian goats Clover and Timothy, and take home a complimentary sunflower bouquet. As the sunflowers fade, the I ❤️ Keuka Lake corn maze and a kid-sized tractor maze take over, with a U-pick pumpkin patch close behind.
