New York’s next Free Freshwater Fishing Days are June 27–28, which means anyone 16+ can fish without buying a license (kids under 16 can always fish free). It’s the perfect excuse to plan a slow morning on Keuka Lake or along the Keuka Outlet Trail, teach someone how to cast for the first time, or finally take Dad, your kids, or a friend who’s been meaning to learn.

Where do the birders go when they sneak away to the Finger Lakes? 👀🩉

Here in Yates County, it’s all about quiet trails, water views, and the “did you hear that?!” moment. The Keuka Outlet Trail gives you miles of wooded path along the water with great bird‑watching pockets, old mill ruins, and enough space to pause and actually listen for them. If you’re willing to get up early, you’ll catch more songs than you can name!

A few more great nearby spots to add to your list:

Saunders Finger Lakes Museum – Townsend Grady Wildlife Preserve (Branchport): Follow Sugar Creek to watch for waterfowl, purple martins, and migratory birds along the creek and Keuka’s northwestern arm.

Verdi Burtch Wildlife Sanctuary: Just across from the Museum, this sanctuary gives you another protected pocket of habitat to explore in the same outing.

West River at High Tor Wildlife Management Area: A short drive away, with wetlands, river, forest, and open fields; great for spotting everything from marsh birds to raptors.

In the Finger Lakes, family time can look like a beach day at Keuka Lake State Park, a picnic at Indian Pines or Red Jacket Park, a visit to the Dundee Area Historical Society, or time spent exploring the open-air grounds at Saunders Finger Lakes Museum together.

If you want to turn it into an overnight, the family itinerary adds in kid-friendly favorites like Brock's Bowl & Pizzeria, the The Art Studio 126 Main and easy local dining in Penn Yan and Dundee. Even one day here can feel full in the best way!

A postcard from Yates County, featuring May 💌

The spring flowers were in full beauty, sailing clubs are back on the lake and we hosted a massive Model A group in the area for a few days. Mennonite greenhouses were a "must stop" for flowers, while the vineyards were in full bud break. Fishing picked up on the lake as the days got warmer.
