On this day in Pensacola history:
Hurricane Opal made landfall during the evening of October 4, 1995 at Pensacola Beach. It was a Category 3 hurricane with
sustained winds of 115 mph. The area of the beach that was flattened by this powerful storm was renamed Opal Beach, and
now offers restrooms and picnic pavilions. It is managed by Gulf Islands National Seashore and can be accessed on the same National Seashore pass that provides entrance to Fort Pickens.
