Yaku Peoria

Yaku Peoria With the regeneration of the Hale Memorial Church complete, the city of Peoria will have a treasure unique unto itself - one we can be proud to call our own.

Yaku works to repurpose the historic Hale Memorial Church as an international cultural center to unify Main street and realize the district's potential as a conduit for economic and cultural prosperity. This sacred place will offer our community the opportunity to experience the cultures of the world, and for the world to fall in love with Peoria. Over time, our fiscal, cultural, and emotional inv

estment will bring renewed focus to the value of revitalizing historic spaces. We envision a city that more deeply appreciates experiencing and connecting with our heritage in a new light. A place where people can come together under one roof to connect more deeply with their own community and be humbled by the humanity of artistic experience. As Yaku – a Quechua word of the South American Incas meaning water – together, we will cultivate the seed that is the Hale Memorial Church.

The organization Yaku, is no longer the owner of the Church. In early 2020 it was returned to the County and later purchased by a private company based out of a Chicago suburb. The doors have been padlocked and there is now caution tape surrounding parts of the building.

We invite you to a "goodbye ceremony" to say a final farewell to the Hale Memorial Church. It will be an informal occasion held outside the building as an opportunity to check in with those who have been involved over the years, share some fond memories, and talk about what the future holds.

We plan to bring actual candles to share. You are welcome to bring your own candles or any other item that seems fitting for a candle vigil in honor of a church building.

This is not the end of Yaku, it is the end of our efforts to save the HMC.

With a great political propaganda campaign carried out by the Velasco Alvarado government (1968) in Peru, with various artistic contests to configure an image of Túpac Amaru, all were left deserted and a consensus was never reached on how to build his image. However, in the process, the hat, the spear, the medallion and the horse were elements that marked the character so much that they already portrayed him, despite the fact that these elements contradicted each other.
