Brief history Monday.

Why did the Gardenville Hotel end up in the Halsey Cabin shootout story?

The Problem:
It appears as though the Gardenville didn’t exist yet in 1783.

The Theory:
Traces back to Eleazar Doan, the outlaws’ second cousin, and his string of tavern licenses in Plumstead through the 1780s-90s. What we now call the Gardenville, is where Doan tavern once stood.

One of my favorite stops on the Doan Gang tour. Levi & Abraham Doan’s graves, tucked just outside the graveyard wall at Plumstead Meeting House. In 1788 each died an outlaw.
