I remember that the beauty has always been there, and the gratitude just deepens.

Lately one truth has been guiding me:

I’m building a life I don’t need a vacation from-
But one I want to share with the world.

And that feels like a real gift.

Today I’m thankful for the ways my life and work are expanding, for the people who trust me to design their journeys, and for the quiet focus that’s shaping everything I do.

Wishing you a day filled with warmth, ease and the kind of joy that lingers long after the holiday ends.

Happy Thanksgiving 🙏🏽

Luxury travel is so often framed as marble lobbies, champagne toasts, and exclusivity. But the truth is, real luxury is rooted in culture — and in the traditions that connect us.

More than a decade ago, Sheila Johnson — entrepreneur, philanthropist, and the visionary founder of Salamander Middleburg — created more than a resort. She built a gathering place. A cultural hub. A home for excellence.

✨ Through events like The Family Reunion, Salamander carries forward the tradition of Black families uniting around food, creativity, and community.
✨ Through the annual Middleburg Film Festival, it has become a stage for global storytelling.
✨ Through her leadership in sports and beyond, Johnson continues to influence culture in ways far greater than luxury alone.

This year, Northern Virginia Magazine named Sheila Johnson one of the 50 Most Influential People of 2025. And it’s easy to see why: she reminds us that luxury travel isn’t just about indulgence. It’s about heritage, vision, and the spaces where we see ourselves reflected.

Please join me in celebrating Sheila Johnson — a leader who is shaping not only the future of luxury travel, but the way we experience community and connection!

Luxury travel has been sold to us all wrong.

And it matters—because the way we define “luxury” shapes where we go, how we spend, and what we take home with us.

For years, we’ve been told it’s the infinity pool shot, the selfie with champagne in first class, the drone shot of that overwater bungalow you never leave. And sure, experiencing these things cost a bit of money. But here’s the truth:

✨ Luxury isn’t about who spends the most. It’s about who chooses with intention.

When I think of real luxury, I don’t picture clichés. I think of:
✨ Ease — arriving at a resort where every detail is seamless, so you can actually exhale.
✨ Connection — sitting down to a home-cooked meal. That’s when travel becomes personal, not comparative.
✨ Meaning — maybe hiking, then finding restoration in the spa.

That’s what travel should do: move your mind, heart, and soul.

Luxury isn’t loud.
It’s personal. Intentional. Transformational.

💭 I’d love to hear from you—when you think of luxury travel, do you picture the things… or the transformation?

Still dancing, 32 years in.
Since there’s no room for 32 photos here, this one will do.

We’ve explored cities, chased sunsets, wandered markets—and we still find joy in the simplest shared moments.

Because the real luxury? It’s not just where we go. It’s who we’re becoming together along the way.

This moment felt like a love letter to us both. ✨

Travel tastes better when it’s local.

From cooking classes with local aunties and grandmas to long-table dinners tucked behind unmarked doors—these are the moments that stay with you.

When I plan trips, food isn’t filler. It’s an invitation to culture, care, and connection.

🛫 Luxury wasn’t the goal. Peace was. But we booked both.

She didn’t know where she wanted to go. She just knew she was tired of planning everything—for everyone. And this time, she wanted to be the one taken care of.

When she booked the call, it wasn’t to talk destinations. It was to say: “I need a trip that feeds my soul. I just don’t know what that looks like yet.”

So I listened. Not just to where she’s been, but to where she is now—in her life, in her spirit.

I pulled from the tools I know best. Twenty years as a researcher, always chasing what brings people joy. A strategist’s brain, thinking three steps ahead. A planner’s eye, trained to turn ideas into real, life-giving moments.

I asked the kinds of questions no booking site ever will: What pace does your body crave? What kind of freedom are you seeking? What’s the version of you that this trip needs to meet?

And then I built it.

A slow, soulful journey through northern Thailand. Daily rituals and temple offerings. Traditional massage. A flower market visit at sunrise. A quiet moment with a monk. Every day designed to honor both her need for wonder—and her need for rest.

When she came home, she didn’t say she felt rested. She said she felt like herself.

India was complicated.

I was the only Black woman I saw the entire time.
The one with braided burgundy hair.
The one people stared at. Whispered about. Tried to secretly photograph.

It felt never-ending.

I spent a lot of my 3 weeks there trying to make sense of it—
trying to decide how I should feel.

They were curious about me.
I thought maybe I was a symbol of something powerful.
I felt proud, like I was representing more than just myself.
I felt like maybe I was an ambassador for Black women travelers.

I was. I am.

But over time, it wore me down.
The cameras. The videos.
The kind of curiosity that doesn’t ask permission.
And the realization that it was never about me…
or my story… or Black women.

It was about someone else’s story.
Someone’s post.
Someone’s proof that they’d seen someone “different.”

Honestly… it was completely exhausting.

You know I travel from a place of deep curiosity.
I want to learn, to connect, to understand.
I’m a total knowledge seeker.

But in India, I had to face what it feels like when that same curiosity is turned on you—
and not always in a way that feels genuine, kind, or accepting.

Not every destination meets you where you are.
Or takes you where you want to go.
Some places just don’t feel right.

And that doesn’t mean it’s a place to write off.
It might just mean you return later—
with a different mindset.
A stronger sense of self.
A heart ready for the next layer of growth.

Because travel isn’t always comfortable.
But it will always teach you something.

Sometimes travel asks you to stretch.
To take the trip. Try the dish. Sit in the discomfort.
Even if you don’t feel ready.
Even if you don’t quite know what you’ll find.

That kind of stretch?
Might be exactly what your soul needs.
(You’ll feel it later.)

✈️ Has a destination ever stretched or surprised you in the best way?
Drop it in the comments.
