2019 marks the tenth year since the end of the civil war, and this Easter there was also a devastating bombing in Batticaloa. Due to various considerations, we had a smaller program than usual, lasting two weeks in Batticaloa, Eastern Province, and one week in Oori, Karainagar, Northern Province.

Along with our educational approach through the lens of female power, we focused on Community, discussing what our sense of community is, where it is, with whom and how it differs person to person. We opened space to discuss communities in our villages, towns, and across the country, whilst even exploring diaspora experiences. We shared how communities can work together, how we can grow and be open to learning and unlearning.

Here are some pictures sharing activities we did during our first week in Batticaloa. We had capoeira, yoga, art therapy, creative expression, singing, drama, silambam, cricket, mentoring, leadership building and conversations on race, class, caste, religion, and gender. For the first time, we had swimming lessons and visited the Islamic Heritage Museum of Kattankudy.

We want to extend a huge thanks to our Capokolam team, our new volunteers, CACM and all of their staff, coaches at Weber Stadium, all those who donated and support our work, the local community, and the young people we had the opportunity to work with, who trusted us with their time, energy, bodies, spirits and minds for another fun learning experience for every one involved.
