lightly narrated tour or no narration at all. The City of Philadelphia, the fifth-largest city in the nation was settled in 1682 by English gentleman William Penn. As the capital of his new colony of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia quickly became the cultural, political, and financial center of the American colonies. The growth of the City was a result of its important port and waterfront industries that allowed it to become a gateway to the world. Many of our guests simply want to get away from the grind of the city and just relax out on the water. We offer pre-concert cruises, happy hour cruises and city light tours. And in 2013, there will be more than 25 evening firework events to enjoy. Schuylkill River Cruises - Discovery the Hidden River! Come aboard our vessel and experience a journey down the Schuylkill, seeing the world famous waterworks, the Art Museum, the Schuylkill Banks, Bartram Gardens, numerous bridges that link West Philadelphia with the rest of the City, Philadelphia’s City Lights, and many more attractions! Philadelphia's Hidden River was given the Dutch name Schuylkill by its European discoverer, Arendt Corssen of the Dutch West India Company. One explanation given for this name is that it translates to "hidden river" and refers to the river's merger with the Delaware River at League Island (the Navy Yard), which was nearly hidden by dense vegetation. Another explanation is that the name properly translates to "hideout creek.”
