The Our Market Tour was highlighted by Billy Penn this week in their article, “Our Market Tours shows off an artistic and authentic embrace of Ninth Street.” (Link to article in bio).

Julia Binswanger writes, “Our Market Tours, now in its second year, is back in full swing – educating tourists and locals about the tradition of the Italian Market… Or, well, the “Italianish” Market.

The guided tours are part of the bigger “Our Market” project, which began in 2019 celebrating the rich and mixed immigrant history of the street. From the mind of local artist Michelle Angela Ortiz, the project revitalizes spaces on Ninth Street that need upkeep, like awnings or produce stands, but with added artistic flourishes that celebrate the personal legacies behind each business.

Stops on the tour involve large, colorful murals and light boxes with designs that celebrate the history of stores in the market. In explaining the artwork from the Our Market project, the tour guides are also telling the stories of individuals and celebrating the legacy of Ninth Street.”

Come joins us on the Our Market Tour to explore the area you may know as the “Italian Market” and leave with a greater appreciation and understanding of what 9th Street has offer. ✨

We’ve had a great time with the summer camps that have been joining us for the Our Market Tour. This past week, the Dandelion Project explored the area known as the Italian Market with us, while seeing the public artwork created by the iconic Michelle Angela Ortiz.

While in DC, I got to catch up with Kaitlin from A Tour of Her Own, which is the first DC tour company to focus *exclusively* on women’s history. It was amazing to chat about business and women’s history. She even signed her book for me, 111 Places in Women’s History that You Must Not Miss. If you’re ever in DC, check out her tours!

Rebecca here! Over the weekend I went to DC for the wedding of two college friends. A Tour of Her Own () founder, Kaitlin () recommended the LGBT tour of the Congressional Cemetary. I got to pay my respects at the graves of three people we talk about on our Gayborhood tour (Barbara Gittings, Alain Locke, and Frank Kameny). It was incredibly moving to see these grave sites this Pride Month. Especially in this political moment, it is powerful to remember the footsteps we walk in as a community and the leaders who’ve stood up for what’s right.

Do you dream of sharing LGBTQ history on a 94 degree day to a dad from Connecticut who will ask you “What’s a Bear?”

Do you yearn to experience a group of 17-year olds playing on their phones while you yell through sheets of rain about the first women to get their medical degrees?

If this sounds like you….woah, you sound passionate about inclusive history and you have a great sense of humor. Maybe you should apply to be a guide! Check out bio for a link to the application.

Last weekend, we did our first run through of the Drag Me Philly Tour. ✨ This tour weaves archival information from The William Way LGBT Archives with interviews with local drag artists from The Drag Arts Oral History Project () and places these stories around the Gayborhood to celebrate the drag arts in Philadelphia. This feels especially important in this moment in America (to say the least). Stay tuned for more updates.
