She created Mother’s Day. Then she spent the rest of her life trying to cancel it. 💐

Anna Jarvis called Philadelphia home. On May 10, 1908, she held the first official Mother’s Day celebrations, one in West Virginia and one right here at Wanamaker’s on 13th & Market, backed by John Wanamaker. Her symbol was a white carnation, her mother’s favorite flower. By 1914 it was a national holiday. By 1943, Anna was petitioning to end it.

Did you know? The U.S. Supreme Court used to meet right here in Philadelphia, in Old City Hall, steps from Independence Hall. ⚖️

From 1791 until 1800, while Philadelphia served as the nation’s capital, the nation’s highest court sat in this building, still working out its role in a brand-new government. When the capital moved to Washington, D.C., the justices went with it, and the building carried on as Philadelphia’s City Hall until 1854.

Walk the streets where a new nation worked out how to govern itself. Reservations only for our 9AM tour.

The Streets That Changed Names

Ever notice Philadelphia's streets don't all follow the same naming logic? There's a reason for that.

Market Street was once High Street, renamed for the markets that popped up along it. Arch Street was Mulberry, until locals started calling it "the Arch Street" for the bridge that crossed over it. Race Street was Sassafras, until people started racing horses down it. South Street was Cedar, renamed to mark the actual edge of Penn's city plan.

And here's one more: Philadelphia doesn't have a 1st Street. As the story goes, Penn believed only God should be "first”, so instead, the city starts at Front Street.

PHILLY FIRSTS 🍺

McGillin's Olde Ale House opened its doors in 1860, the same year Abraham Lincoln was elected president.

That makes it Philadelphia's oldest continuously operating tavern, and one of the oldest in the entire country. It's survived the Civil War, two World Wars, Prohibition, and two pandemics, still pouring pints in the same spot, generations later.
