City Hall is the largest municipal building in the United States. It took 30 years and $24 million to build. For decades, no skyscraper in Philadelphia was allowed to be taller than the statue of William Penn at its peak.

That was a gentlemen's agreement, not a law. In 1987, One Liberty Place broke it.

Philadelphia sports teams did not win a single major championship for the next 25 years. Philadelphians call it the Curse of Billy Penn. They are only partly joking.

The curse broke in 2008 when construction workers placed a small Penn figurine on the city's tallest building. The Phillies won the World Series weeks later.

Society Hill is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in America.

It almost did not exist.

In the 1950s and 60s, urban planners wanted to run an expressway directly through Old City and Society Hill. It would have wiped out hundreds of 18th-century buildings -- buildings that had survived the Revolution, the Civil War, two World Wars.

A community of residents -- historians, architects, regular homeowners -- fought it for two decades. The highway was never built.

What you walk through today is the result of that fight.
