It is officially April and bear activity is increasing every day. Stay 50 yards (150ft) away from wildlife. Follow the speed limit to avoid injuring or killing wildlife crossing roads. Respect their distance; bears are wild animals and the park is their home. If you wish to take a photo remain inside your car and do not block traffic.

Y’all.

Black bears are going to begin emerging from their dens right about now through April.

Just a bit of advice to use your common sense if you see a bear.

Common sense:
-Don’t approach a bear.
-Don’t touch a bear.
-Don’t feed bears.
-Admire from a distance.
-Don’t litter and don’t leave trash or food out.
-Always be prepared.
-NEVER run from a bear. That will encourage its predatory instincts.
-Be aware of your surroundings
-Stay away from the cubs

Not common sense per se but you need to know:
-Carry bear spray and learn how to use it.
-If you see a bear and it sees you, maintain eye contact and carefully step back.
-If a bear approaches you (HINT: it probably will not) then stand your ground. Get loud. Use bear spray.
-If a bear attacks you then you best fight for your life. Don’t play dead.

Above all else, please respect all wildlife. You are in their territory. And they will defend it if they have to.

MESSAGE FROM SEVIER COUNTY EMA

This is a message from Sevier County EMA. Sevier County and the City of Gatlinburg remains under a Flood Warning until 2:30 PM.

Inclement flooding is possible across Sevier County and in the downtown Gatlinburg area throughout the remainder of the day. Be prepared to take action to move to higher ground if necessary. Be sure to take extra time and extreme caution if travel is necessary due to road conditions.

The City of Gatlinburg has opened an emergency shelter due to flooding. The shelter is at the Gatlinburg Community Center, which is located at 157 Mills Park Road. Officials are ready to accept anyone needing shelter at this time at the Community Center.

The Gatlinburg Trolley System is dedicating two Trolleys for any necessary evacuations that may be needed. The Trolleys will be located behind Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies and on Bishop Lane, behind Pi Beta Phi Elementary School.

Turn Around. Don’t Drown.
