🎨 This week, Holly Young is the Native American Artist in Residence at Pipestone National Monument! She’ll be creating art and answering questions from Saturday, June 21st through Friday, June 27th. The PNM Visitor Center Hours are 8:30 am until 4:30 pm daily.
In 2023, Holly Young was commissioned by Pipestone National Monument to create the above artwork. The three young women are representative of the Three Maidens located near the Quarry Pond. They are surrounded by blue light to indicate their spiritual nature and are holding prayer ties in open hands indicating that they will receive your gifts. Medicinal plants and prairie flowers grow all around Pipestone National Monument and are also reflected in the work including: prairie rose, rosebud, sand cherries, purple clover, broadleaf arrowhead, daisy fleabane, forget me not, thistle, beard tongue, lead plant, milkweed, sage and purple coneflower. The inclusion of the pipes show how Native Americans use the pipestone quarried at this sacred site. In the background are the Sioux quartzite cliffs found along the Circle Trail.
The Pipestone Indian Shrine Association offers this design in various products at their gift shop located inside the Visitor Center at the Pipestone National Monument. Those include ceramic mugs, magnets, tote bags, prints, and more. This week, you have the opportunity to meet this artist. Stop out, learn about her work, and say hello during her artist in residency time in Pipestone, MN. There are no admission fees to visit the Pipestone National Monument; it is free for all ages. Plus, it's a beautiful time to walk the scenic Circle Trail alive with all of the flora and fauna of Summer.
There will be two additional Native American Artists in Residence this Summer at the Pipestone National Monument: John Knife Sterner from July 25-31 and Marlena Myles from August 23-29.
