That smooth, stacked cloud sitting on top of the peak? That’s a lenticular.
It forms when strong winds are ripping over the mountain, even if it feels calm where you are. Up high, that usually means serious wind, rough conditions on ridgelines, and the potential for weather to shift fast.
If you see one, it’s worth pausing and thinking about what’s going on above you—the summit might not be as friendly as it looks.
