Sutton Knob

Sutton Knob Sutton Knob is located just minutes from downtown Brevard on a 94-acre tract of land overlooking the Pisgah National Forest

Sutton Knob is a planned community development currently under construction that is located just minutes from downtown Brevard. Visitors to Sutton Knob will experience expansive views of the nearby Pisgah National Forest from multiple locations within the property, while lakes, streams and small waterfalls await those who venture into the beautiful hardwood forests found in the valley below the su

mmit of Sutton Knob. Construction on a series of roads, hiking trails and mountain bike trails is currently underway with a scheduled grand opening of the first phase of the development set for early summer of 2014. Also in the early stages of development are the first of 15 planned cottages on the property that offer traditional styling with their craftsman-style designs. Inside the three bedroom cottages visitors will find all of the modern amenities they need, as well as incredible views of the vast Pisgah National Forest that beckons visitors to explore the outdoors during their stay at Sutton Knob. The first five of these cottages will be available for rent starting in October 2014 through Deer Ridge Property Management. In addition to the 15 cabins located on the 96-acre property, Sutton Knob will also feature a centrally-located lodge-style gathering place that will provide opportunities for guests to get together with their friends and families and fully enjoy their stay in the mountains of North Carolina thanks to the large decks, indoor and outdoor eating areas and abundant opportunities for recreation for both children and adults.

“We want Sutton Knob to be all about the outdoor adventure experience,” said Daniel Schuessler, owner and developer of Sutton Knob. “I want the development to really reflect the county that it sits in. For that reason, we want to have elements of everything that makes Transylvania County so special.”

sutton knob 9To do that, Schuessler has hired a team of contractors from Transylvania County to help not only with the development of the outdoor amenities such as hiking trails, lakes and picnic pavilions, but with all facets of the development process, from road construction to the construction of the 15 homes on the Sutton Knob property. Among those contractors is Scott Bolyard, who will be heading up the design and planning of the development’s infrastructure and amenities. He said he hopes Sutton Knob will become a top destination for people looking to spend a vacation in the mountains of Western North Carolina.

“I hope that Sutton Knob becomes a place for people to come and stay in Transylvania County and experience the region,” he said. “While they’re here, we hope to capture their attention while they are on the property with things that can supplement a lot of the great activities they can do in the area with some amenities on the property. We just want to provide a really nice weekend getaway in the mountains and leave a lasting impression on visitors.”

Architect Travis Mileti said one of his goals with the development is to work to ensure that the homes he designs fit seamlessly into the natural surroundings of Sutton Knob. The cottages will be two bedroom homes between 1,600 and 2,000 square feet and will feature timber frame interior elements with exposed timber trusses, posts and support beams, along with wood floors and a stone fireplace.

“Our goal is always to create something that has a timeless look and feel,” he said. “We want it to feel like it has been established for a long time and has been there for many years.”

Mileti said he works closely with the builders, landscape architects, project developers and others to accomplish that look and feel.

“A lot of it has to do with the choice of materials used in the project,” he said. “We want to use traditional materials that look like they could have been used in the 1920s as much as today. Ultimately, we won’t be using any artificial materials, but instead want to use indigenous materials that give a timeless look, that way in the future, it won’t go out of style. cedardale-cottage-plan

“We want the house to have a strong presence and look like it was meant to be there. We don’t want it to feel like it was forced on the site, but instead look like it belongs there.”

While the amenities found within Sutton Knob are sure to keep visitors busy throughout their visit, the nearby Pisgah National Forest, DuPont State Forest and Gorges State Park offer guests of the Land of Waterfalls an extensive network of trails, waterfalls, scenic drives and outdoor adventures like few places in America. Mileti believes the traditional look of the cottages, coupled with the trail systems throughout the development, the long-range mountain views and the nearby hiking, biking and waterfall viewing opportunities nearby will only enhance Sutton Knob’s goals to provide a mountain getaway.

“This is located right in the heart of some of the best mountain biking in the region,” Bolyard said. “In addition to that, the trout fishing opportunities located in Pisgah National Forest along the Davidson River are just an incredible resource. Add in the hiking, waterfalls and other activities you’ll find in the area and it’s clear that this area is a great resource that has the potential to draw a lot of visitors.”

Sutton Knob offers a pristine low density mountain experience minutes away from the urban areas of Brevard and Asheville. Stephen “Billy” Harris and Portfolio Properties will be be releasing details later this spring on how you could become part of this wonderful community. Sutton Knob is ideally located to enjoy a wealth of recreational, cultural and educational opportunities, yet its quiet setting offers the perfect place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Residents will enjoy private home sites with sweeping mountain views, easy access to the nearly 40 acres of greenspace and trails. As the Parkway's 2021 visitor season wraps up, we want to send a special thank you to the park's incredible seasonal employees! The Parkway could not operate without the passion and dedication that each and every one of the seasonal staff brings to this park. Seasonal employees support nearly every operation of the park, and expand our capacity to meet the NPS mission by welcoming and educating visitors, protecting our resources, and helping keep the park looking beautiful. Be sure to drop a "thank you" in the comments to show your appreciation too!

Fall color stretches along Grandfather Mountain's iconic profile, as viewed from the nearby town of Seven Devils.

A recent bout of warm weather seems to have slowed the color progression, meaning vibrant colors are still abundant at the WNC High Country's higher elevations, such as Grandfather Mountain. With cooler weather on the way this weekend, experts believe the color change could potentially reach peak by the middle of next week.

"A cold front is supposed to move in next weekend, which should get things going," said Dr. Howie Neufeld, professor of biology at Appalachian State University and the WNC High Country's official Fall Color Guy. "Meanwhile, this week will be sunny, with no rain, so a good time to visit."
