⚠️ Poodle Dog Bush Warning!!!‼️
Heads up if you’re out hiking right now—this stuff is nasty.
Poodle Dog Bush (Eriodictyon parryi) can cause a rash worse than poison oak for many people.
What it looks like:
• Tall plant (2–6+ ft)
• Sticky, narrow leaves
• Clusters of lavender/purple flowers
• Often has a strong, unpleasant smell when touched
Where it grows:
• Common after wildfires
• Dry hillsides, burn scars, trails
• Seen around the Central Coast, SoCal, and inland foothills
When it’s worst:
• Spring through early summer (right now)
• Especially when flowering
Why it’s bad:
• The sticky resin can cause severe contact dermatitis
• Rash can blister, swell, and last weeks
• Can spread from skin, clothing, gear, or pets
Avoid it:
• Don’t brush against it or walk through patches
• Keep dogs out of it (they can transfer it to you)
• Wash clothes/shoes after hikes in burn areas
If exposed:
• Wash ASAP with soap + cool water
• Don’t scrub hard (spreads oils)
• Hydrocortisone or see a doctor if severe
Bottom line:
If you see tall purple flower spikes in burn areas—give it space. This one hurts worse than poison oak!
