Home to the nation's only collegiate gorilla mascot, six of the oldest fried chicken restaurants in Kansas, and a history and habitat not like the rest of state A 100-year search for coal changed that. Shovels pushed topsoil aside to get to the underground bed of coal, leaving behind steep rocky hill ranges surrounding deep pits which filled with water. Wilderness and wildlife followed. Today thes

e man-made lakes and forests are prime outdoor recreation areas: camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, and increasingly, mountain biking and kayaking. The "Mined Land Wildlife Areas" of Southeast Kansas are owned by the state and open to public use. 40+ sections ("units") include more than 1,000 man-made lakes with an estimated 200 miles of shoreline and 80+ boat ramps scattered across two counties. 👨‍🍳 NEW speciality food store, The Well Traveled Chef - Cooking Store & Classes, recently opened in Arma, Kansas! The owner, who traveled extensively after law school, curates specialty foods from around the globe, including an extensive collection of olive oils and vinegars. I purchased a buttermilk biscuit mix. YUM!

I love to discover places not on my travel itinerary! I think of them as surprise gems, and Girard General Store is worth pulling over in Girard, Kansas.

The recently opened antique store serves homemade ice cream and shoppers can select purchase nostalgic candy and cold soda pop. I chatted with the owner who is so nice, and she's a wealth of knowledge having authored a book about the town!

✔ Pro Tip: Don't leave without checking out the bathroom's walls covered in historical images of Girard and its residents.
