Vision: Educational communities where students, educators, and families can celebrate, learn about, and thrive in diversity of gender identity, expression, and sexual orientation. Values:

Together: At THRIVE we believe that we must work together, both within our organization and within the greater LGBTQ community, to create and sustain LGBTQ-inclusive educational communities throughout Southwest

Pennsylvania. Hard Work: Creating lasting, positive change in educational environments will not come over night and will take hard work and commitment from everyone in our organization as we work towards our mission of sustaining inclusive educational communities throughout the region. Respect: Meaningful change can only come about when everyone in the community feels valued which starts with treating all individuals with dignity and respect. Inclusive: Inclusive educational communities that are responsive to the diverse needs and experiences of the LGBTQ community benefit everyone from students, to parents, to educators. Voices: People are the experts of their own experiences and all their voices should be heard and valued equally as we work towards creating safe, inclusive educational communities. Education: Education is vital to the development of young people and as such, everyone deserves to pursue his or her education in a safe and inclusive environment where students feel supported and respected for who they are.

“Never try to categorize or define what being nonbinary means or looks like for an individual — especially if those concepts are clouded by racism, fatphobia, ableism, classism, misogyny, or any other form of oppression. A person's name, pronouns, and presentation does not define their gender. Rather, these are tools that some of us may or may not use to help communicate or validate our identities externally, but they can never fully encapsulate the matrices of colors and light that are refracted within us.”

"While the words we use to describe ourselves have changed over time, we have always been here."

“I am so grateful that I can just focus on being a regular kid at school. I have so many other things on my mind, like getting into my top college choice, so I don’t want to have to worry about whether I can use the boys’ restroom,” said Drew Adams. “It was upsetting to think my school didn’t want me because I am transgender, and I hope no one else has to feel like that.”

A federal court ruled in a Lambda Legal lawsuit in favor of Drew Adams, a 17-year-old transgender high schooler.
