Yesterday was our last full day on the ship and definitely the highlight! We boarded a small boat of about 150 passengers who we able to get up close to the Hubbard Glacier. Hubbard is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. 76 miles long and still advancing. The face is 350 ft and when including what’s under the water, it is taller than the Seattle space needle. Right when we arrived at the glacier we saw (and heard!) magnificent calving (see comment for video). How to celebrate that? With a glacierito of course! Made with ice from the glacier!!

Next port: Icy Straight Point! Took two gondolas 1600 feet above sea level—straight into the cloud cover! I couldn’t get over the height of the pine trees. Did a little hiking to see the hidden lake (thought Bob Ross would have done a good painting of that!) and followed it up with a warm drink and treats back on board and now to the hot tub!

Port day three: Juneau. We went to the Mendenhall Glacier followed by a salmon bake. We went back to the picturesque town for Alaskan King Crab— when in Alaska!

Port day 2: Sitka. The country’s largest city. Another Wilderness Exploration. We saw grey whales, humpbacks and even Orkas (very rare in Sitka at this time of year), seals, sea lions and more bald eagles before settling in for a feast at Tin Island. Yummy eats of roast beef, seafood chowder, and snow crab. Finished it off with smores over the fire pit. Not a bad morning!

goes to Alaska

Our Alaska adventure is underway! First stop was Ketchikan. We did a tour of the George Inlet where we saw bald eagles. We followed this with a crab feast. Amazing day.

The food in Turkey is delicious! Last night in Istanbul was at a beautiful rooftop restaurant with the Blue Mosque as our backdrop. Can’t wait to return someday!
