Every time I see these old cypress stumps, I think about the giant trees that once stood here. They’re like scars left behind from a time when much of the Atchafalaya Basin’s ancient forest was logged away.

The Basin is still an incredible place, but it continues to face threats. That’s why the works so hard to protect it. The truth is, they can’t do it alone.

The next time you enjoy a plate of crawfish, take a moment to appreciate the spillway crawfishermen who make it possible. Long before the boil begins, they’re navigating rough conditions, running traps, and putting in countless hours on the water. It’s hard work, and it’s an important part of Louisiana’s culture and heritage.

We like to think of him as part of the tour crew at this point—no introduction needed, just a quiet nod and “yep, there he is again.”
