Meet as strangers, go out as friends. We had the awesome opportunity to take this phenomenal couple from the Netherlands on the world-famous Rubicon trail. Started at Loon lake, went to Little Sluice had lunch then went back out via Wentworth Springs. They both drove the Black Widow awesomely. We will call this the BEAUTY & the BEAST run. Black Widow and Big Rhonda IYKYK.

Rubicon Trail Adventures…and Catering!

On Monday we sent three of our guides (Ron, Rich, and Bart) up to Rubicon Springs to cater a dinner for an amazing group of 19 people. The group members, who were from Texas and Wyoming, were previous customers of the true Rubicon Trail Adventures guided trips. This time, they all drove their own super capable Jeeps to the trail and hired us for meals only.

Monday night, the group feasted on smoked bacon wrapped jalapeño boats stuffed with cheese, smoked trip-tip from Kings Meats, salad, baked potatoes, and of course…The peach cobbler. The next morning, we prepared a breakfast burrito buffet featuring bacon and chorizo from King’s Meats, cheese, two kinds of salsa, and sour cream. As much as we would love to share food photos, I (Rich) got so caught up in the majestic beauty of Rubicon Springs that I totally forgot!

We truly enjoyed being of service to this group. Thank you Ed Bromley & Tammy trusting Rubicon Trail Adventures with all your culinary needs!

Just one simple photo and a great reminder. Torque your stuff, yes I know you have to let all the air out of the tires and you have to do 160 different bolts. That’s just your awesome and lug nuts. When bolts are loose that’s when bad things happen.

On Sunday, June 7th, 2026, Rubicon Trail Adventures guide Sie Wilhelm was traversing the trail without any customers just south of Arnold’s Rock when he happened upon a well-built Ford E-350 wheelchair accessible mobility van that was stuck on a large rock. The van had a crushed transmission pan, rendering all forward and reverse gears inoperable. As Sie approached, he saw the van was blocking the trail. After van driver’s friends in a Jeep TJ were unsuccessful in pulling the van off the rocks with tow straps, they ran a winch line and secured it to Arnold’s rock.🪨 Unfortunately, the winch line broke. The van was just too heavy and too stuck! 🤷🏻‍♂️

Sie positioned his custom-built Jeep Gladiator diesel 💪🏼near the van and successfully pulled the van off the rocks and onto a flat spot next to the trail. The driver was able to exit the van and get into the TJ. That group left the van behind as they went to gather a better-equipped recovery party.

Simultaneous to Sie’s arrival at the stuck van, he heard El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO) transmitting via HAM radio requesting assistance with this situation. EDSO was considering activating their Search and Rescue team to extract the van driver. Sie advised EDSO of the rescue plan, and that the driver was safely on his way off the trail!

The Rubicon Trail is a uniquely amazing off-road resource for everyone to enjoy. Meet our featured Rubicon Trail Adventures guide, Ron Cannon! Ron has been a true icon to the staff and customers at Rubicon Trail Adventures. His limitless dedication to leadership, education, and stewardship of the trail is unsurpassed. When you are out on the trail with Ron, rest assured his Jeep is packed everything you need to ensure a fun and successful adventure. At camp, you can always count on Ron to have the hot coffee ready in the morning before anyone else even awakens.

Ron is passionate about his contributions to the off-road community. In addition to his hard work for us, Ron serves on the board of directors for Rubicon Trail Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the future health of the Rubicon Trail.

Ron’s commitment to serving others doesn’t stop on the trail. He served as a full time Placerville Police Officer for 25-years, and as a retiree, has been a School Resource Officer at the Placerville schools. We are very proud to have Ron represent Rubicon Trail Adventures, and we are confident you will feel the same way on your next trip with Rubicon Trail Adventures!

This month’s featured Rubicon Trail Adventures trail guide is Chipper Ross! We have often said that Chipper was “born on the trail,” but little did we know how accurate this was! Chipper is part of a multi-generational Jeeping family who were very much a part of the Rubicon Trail’s legacy.

Chipper’s grandparents brought his Mom home from the hospital in a 1945 Willys MB. Six months later they took that baby on her first wheeling trip in that Jeep while she was cradled in a pillow lined laundry basket! That little MB completed ten Jeepers Jamborees from 1954 to 1964, thus paving the next generation of Ross Jeepers!

In 1969, Chipper’s parents bought a 1946 CJ2A. The Ross family vacations brought them to The Rubicon Trail, Sierra Trek, and the Calistoga Jeep trails starting when Chipper was just 6-months old. It’s no wonder his first words were not “Mama” or “Papa.” Of course, baby Chipper’s first word was “Jeep!”

Chipper’s dad later opened a shop in Half Moon Bay called Scottie’s 4WD, while his mom worked for Specialty Jeep Parts in South San Francisco. Immersed in the Jeep culture, 9-year-old Chipper was allowed to drive the CJ2A in low range first gear in the field around their house…Which resulted in a rather humorous situation when a CHP officer pulled him over one day!

By 12-years old, Chipper and a friend successfully drove the Jeep over the trail from Loon Lake to Rubicon Springs. Talk about learning how to choose your lines early!

As you can see, Chipper brings some amazing history and trail knowledge to Rubicon Trail Adventures. He knows every inch of the Rubicon Trail, and as a result, he does a fantastic job spotting our customers over every obstacle with finesse!

Chipper and his wife reside in El Dorado County. They have a wonderful daughter who is in fifth grade and two sons, both of whom proudly serve in the U.S. Navy!
