There’s just something about watching whales in that late afternoon and early evening light. I love the way their blows catch that warm, fading sunlight—it can turn even a simple surfacing into something pretty incredible. People ask me all the time what the “best” time of day is to go whale watching, and the truth is, there really isn’t one when it comes to seeing whales. Personally, though, late afternoon and early evening are my favorite times to be on the water, especially because of light like this.
The idea that mornings are always better usually comes from places with bigger, more exposed waters, like Monterey Bay, where conditions can often be calmer earlier in the day. That can make for a more comfortable trip, but it doesn’t mean the whales are more likely to be there in the morning. Whales don’t follow our schedule—and I’ll take that warm evening light every chance I get!
