Seattle send-off!
We disembarked to another rare sunny day in Seattle—what luck! Before heading to the airport, we squeezed in a visit to the iconic Space Needle and the stunning Chihuly Garden and Glass museum. A perfect way to end an incredible trip!

Ketchikan!
This town gets nearly 300 days of rain a year—and it definitely showed off for us! Coldest and wettest day of the trip, but also one of the cutest.

We strolled down Creek Street, once home to the town’s brothels (now adorable gift shops with a wild past!). The creek running through town is famous for salmon swimming upstream—but sadly, no fishy acrobatics this time of year. We did see an adorable otter swimming around for us!

Despite the weather, Ketchikan stole my heart. I just wish the sun had made an appearance!

Next stop: Sitka!
We lucked out with sunny skies (still chilly!), and our guide joked that we should leave the sunshine behind—apparently it’s rare!

We visited some incredible wildlife sanctuaries, starting with the Alaska Raptor Center, where they rehab injured bald eagles and other birds of prey. Most are healed and released, but a few permanent residents stole our hearts.

Next, we walked through a stunning forest trail to a spot nicknamed the “eagle swimming pool”—a calm lake tucked in the middle of a river. Peaceful and picture-perfect.

Then came the Fortress of the Bear, a non-profit that transformed an old factory into a bear sanctuary. We got to watch playful brown and black bears just doing their bear thing—so fun!

We ended the day at Sitka National Historical Park, home to 18 culturally significant totem poles. Our guide shared that only descendants of the original tribes can explain their meanings, which made the experience even more powerful.

Such a meaningful and memorable day in Sitka!

Our first stop was Juneau—chilly and rainy, but we bundled up and explored! We had lunch at the famous Red Dog Saloon, a wild-west throwback with an 87-year-old piano player who’s been cracking jokes there for over 30 years. Of course, we had to try their signature Duck Fart shots!

The next day was scenic cruising through Endicott Arm to Dawes Glacier—absolutely breathtaking! We watched from the Crow’s Nest with floor-to-ceiling windows while the ship’s naturalist narrated. When we reached the glacier, they opened the bow, set up a festive pop-up bar, and served warm coffee drinks. Such a cool experience!

We’re officially sailing to Alaska! We kicked things off with a fun Sailaway party leaving from Seattle. Yesterday was a full day at sea, and I had the chance to attend a great Holland America training session for travel advisors—so much to love about this cruise line!

One of the highlights? They have a naturalist on board for the entire cruise! She gives fascinating talks about Alaskan wildlife and even stands at the front of the ship to help spot animals in real time. Yesterday we saw a pod of whales spouting in the distance—amazing!

Stay tuned for more updates from the Great Land!

All Aboard to Alaska!
We took the train from Salem to Seattle to begin our cruise adventure. Spent the morning exploring the iconic Pike Place Market—watched the famous fish toss, visited the (slightly gross but fascinating) Gum Wall, admired the gorgeous flowers, and enjoyed some delicious chowder.
The best surprise? Sunshine and warm weather in Seattle!

Alaska Cruise Kickoff!
Before setting sail, Kathy and I made a quick stop in Salem, Oregon to visit my niece Katie, her husband Chris, and their sweet pup Bodie. We grabbed lunch in the charming town of McMinnville—just as they were setting up for their annual UFO Festival (yes, really!).
Wrapped up the day with a gorgeous wine tasting at Brooks Winery. Cheers to the start of our Alaskan adventure!
