Meet the “Rockport Lion”
Known officially as the Reddish Egret, this rare and charismatic coastal bird has earned a legendary nickname along the Texas Coastal Bend for its wild personality and dramatic hunting style.
Unlike most wading birds, the Rockport Lion doesn’t quietly stalk its prey. It runs, spins, leaps, spreads its wings, and dances across the shallow flats while chasing fish through the water.
With its shaggy reddish feathers, bold attitude, and energetic movements, it’s one of the most fascinating birds you can encounter along the Rockport shoreline.
Texas is home to a large portion of the United States’ Reddish Egret population, making sightings along our bays and marshes especially meaningful.
Keep your eyes on the shallows during your next tour… you just might spot the Lion of the Flats.
