“I let you go where the sky meets the sea, so you could be everywhere I look for you.”
Some fishing trips are about the fish.
Some are about something far more important.
Today, Peter and Britney Cuva, along with their children, stepped aboard for a day they’ll never forget.
As the sun rose over the Gulf just off the Bolivar Peninsula, Peter scattered the ashes of his beloved mother and father into the sea. With the wind at our backs and the morning light reflecting across the water, their wedding song, “Wild Horses” by The Rolling Stones, played softly as he returned them to the ocean they loved.
Because the ocean doesn’t end at the horizon… and neither does the love we carry for those we’ve lost.
After taking time to honor their memory, we spent the rest of the morning doing what they came to do—making new memories together. Britany started things off with an incredible cownose ray and later landed a beautiful 18-inch speckled trout. The kids and Peter joined in with a bonnethead shark, plenty of sand trout, and smiles that lasted all morning.
Days like today remind me that this job is about so much more than fishing.
It’s about family.
It’s about healing.
It’s about honoring those who came before us while making memories with those still by our side.
Peter and Britany, thank you for trusting me with such a deeply personal moment. It was truly an honor to help you celebrate your parents’ lives. May God continue to bless your family, and I hope today gave you memories that will stay with you for years to come.
