The Photo That Inspired a Masterpiece

Take a close look at this legendary photo from 1935. That’s none other than a young, rugged Ernest Hemingway standing on the docks of Bimini in the Bahamas. Next to him is a giant Bluefin Tuna, completely "apple-cored" by sharks.

Back in the 1930s, Hemingway was a pioneer of big-game sport fishing aboard his beloved boat, the Pilar. Hooking these monsters wasn't the issue; the real battle was reeling them in through deep, shark-infested waters before they were torn to pieces.

On this particular day, a brutal, hours-long battle with this massive tuna ended in heartbreak when a pack of sharks attacked the catch right at the boat. In a wild attempt to defend his prize, Hemingway actually grabbed a Tommy gun and opened fire on the sharks. Unfortunately, the gunfire just created a bloodier feeding frenzy, leaving behind nothing but a skeletal spine and a head.

But this loss wasn’t in vain. The crushing defeat and raw emotion of watching his prize get stolen by the ocean stayed with Hemingway for nearly two decades. In 1952, he channeled this exact experience into his greatest masterpiece, The Old Man and the Sea.

When you read about Santiago’s heartbreaking battle to protect his marlin from the sharks, this photo is exactly what Hemingway was picturing.

As foreshadowed here last week, the federal government has turned over control of red snapper to the states of the Southeast Atlantic. See link below ⬇️

And maybe this will happen

With over 4 million licensed anglers, Florida is the fishing capital of the world. Since Florida assumed state management of Gulf waters in 2018, we’ve expanded opportunities for anglers to fish for snapper in the Gulf year after year—and this year’s 127-day Gulf Red Snapper Recreational Season is the longest in history. But for too long, heavy-handed bureaucrats at NOAA Fisheries have shut off Florida anglers from the Atlantic red snapper harvest despite record abundance.

The Trump Administration has taken bold steps to reverse decades of failed federal control and to empower state-led management. This morning in Fernandina Beach, I was pleased to announce that has submitted an Exempted Fishing Permit (EFP) to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce to allow state management of the recreational red snapper fishery in federal waters.

Taking control of Atlantic red snapper management puts Florida’s future back in our own hands by empowering our fishermen, protecting our waters, fueling our coastal economy, and strengthening the Free State of Florida.
