Florida's first boomtown didn't fade. It was obliterated. 🏚️
In the early 1840s, St. Joseph, Florida was the most powerful city in the state — a thriving Gulf port with a population of nearly 6,000, a railroad, a newspaper, and enough political muscle to host Florida's first constitutional convention in 1838. It was wealthier than Tallahassee. More connected than Pensacola. The future of Florida ran through St. Joseph.
Then came the yellow fever epidemic of 1841, which killed hundreds. Then a Category 4 hurricane in 1841 that leveled the waterfront. Then a tidal surge in 1843 that swallowed what remained. Then fire consumed the ruins.
Within two years, one of the most important cities in Florida's history simply ceased to exist. No monuments. No museum. No marker most people will ever see.
Today, the site sits near Port St. Joe in Gulf County, largely unmarked, largely unknown. The bones of the city are somewhere beneath the Gulf of Mexico.
This is Florida's real history: not just what was built, but what was erased, and why nobody bothered to remember it.
What did they teach you about St. Joseph in school?
