🏑 Discover the Rich History of Porterdale!

Founded in 1830, Porterdale developed as a mill town, beginning with a grist mill, saw mill, and foundry. Later, the Bibb Manufacturing Company operated what was, at the time, the largest twine mill, thriving through the end of World War II. This mill wasn't just the county’s main employer; it was the heart of the community.

🌟 The mill operated the area’s only fully staffed hospital, provided recreation programs for mill workers and their children, and built beautifully designed schools and churches within the village limits.

Today, Porterdale is a charming little town with a beautiful historic atmosphere that reflects its rich past.

🏑 Throwback Thursday: The Welaunee Inn, Porterdale, Newton Co. Georgia

This stunning 2-story building, originally built in 1920 as a dormitory for girls working at the Porterdale Mill, has a fascinating history. It featured 26 rooms, dormitory baths on each floor, a dining room, parlor, and kitchen. A matron watched over the girls, who were allowed to visit home on weekends.

Thank you to Mrs. Piper (.3705), our living historian of Porterdale, for sharing this image of the hotel! πŸ™
