Hiking the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu doesn’t necessarily mean roughing it. You can stay at amazing accommodations like these ones!

Each base camp was slightly different, but they were all way better than we imagined.

We especially loved the mountain sky view! Which one would you love to stay at?

A day in the life on the Salkantay Trek

This just happened to be Day 2- the hardest and longest day of the trek.

Every day begins with coca tea bright and early, breakfast and then we start hiking right away! We got to salkantay pass around 845am, stopped for lunch around 1145 and got to our base camp around 330pm.

When we started planning the Salkantay Trek, we spent hours searching for a training plan.

We found plenty of people saying, “Just hike more.” But almost no one explained how to actually prepare for five days of hiking, altitude, long descents, and carrying a backpack.

Looking back, these are the biggest mistakes we see people make before the trek- and they’re all avoidable.

You don’t need to be an elite athlete to complete the Salkantay Trek. You just need to train for the demands of the trek.

🥾What are you most nervous about: altitude, fitness, or packing?

Five days. One unforgettable adventure!

One of the things we loved most about the Salkantay Trek was how much it changed every single day. From alpine mountain passes to cloud forests, coffee farms, and finally Machu Picchu, it never felt repetitive.

If you’re looking for an adventure that challenges you and rewards you every step of the way, this is one we’ll recommend over and over again.

Would you hike for 5 days to reach Machu Picchu?

When we booked the 5-day Salkantay Trek, we had one big question: How do you actually train for this?

👉🏻If you’re planning the Salkantay Trek, comment TRAIN and we’ll send it to you

There was plenty of information about how hard the trek is, but almost nothing about what to do to prepare.

Should we hike?
Lift weights?
Run?
Train with a backpack?
How long should we train?

As certified personal trainers, we decided to create our own week-by-week plan based on the demands of the trek - and it ended up being one of the best decisions we made before Peru.

So now that we finished the Salkantay Trek, we’re sharing our free 12-week training guide to help other hikers feel more prepared and confident before they go.
