Everyone give it up for our November All-Star Betty of the Month, Liz Fox ! She’s been a regular adventurer with the Bold Betties for quite some time. Her first meeting was at one of our socials at Base Camp Brewery, where she found her tribe and learned about the great opportunities for getting outdoors in the Pacific Northwest. It immediately seemed like a good fit; I mean, her last name is the same animal as our logo! 🦊

Liz moved to Portland when her husband relocated for work, but that wasn’t her only reason. The PNW was where she wanted to be, surrounded by trees! 🌲🌲🌲 When asked why she joined the Bold Betties PDX, she said, “I love the outdoors and wanted to meet new people at the same time.” Although her first meeting with the Bold Betties was a social outing, she quickly jumped in to join several hikes and most recently she went white water rafting!

She said white water rafting was her most memorable Betties adventure; she was a pro with the paddle and braved every rapid with a smile on her face. She also reflected on the post-rafting camping experience saying, “It was so fun to get to know some the Betties better around the ‘campfire.’ There was a fire ban, but I love how that didn’t stop us from gathering around it.”

The advice Liz wants to give nervous, new Betties is to “Show up! It’s so unique to find such a welcoming and diverse community. Hey Bold Betties! Meet our September All-Star Betty of the Month, Kristan! Kristan is a born-and-raised native Portlandian, which makes her a rare breed these days. She has been a member for over a year and reflects fondly on her very first event with the Bold Betties learning stand-up paddleboarding. She said, “I was able to try something new that I had wanted to try for a long while. This accomplished two [of my] goals: experience stand-up paddleboarding for the first time and meet new people.”

Kristan has a lot of BOLD adventures ahead of her. She is leaving the PDX chapter to attend an incredible program in Bend THIS WEEKEND! She will be starting a one year Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program at Central Oregon Community College. Knowing Kristan, she’ll be taking full advantage of living smack dab in the middle of incredible outdoors opportunities, and if you're in the area be sure to reach out and say hello! When asked what’s on her bucket list, she said she plans to hike the entire length of the Oregon Pacific Crest Trail, maybe beyond that! Wow! Kristan joined the Betties to meet like-minded women who enjoy hiking and backpacking, so if you’re interested in knowing more about adventuring in Oregon’s great outdoors and looking for a savvy partner to join you, Kristan is your girl!

Lastly, to any new Betties who are feeling nervous about joining their first Meetup event, you’re not alone. Kristan remembers feeling nervous and self-conscious during her first event, until she got there and met a badass group of babes. She says, “I remember feeling like the group was really positive. It helped hearing that there were a large number of people who had never tried stand-up paddleboarding either… I remember enjoying the experience and the group had a nice, positive vibe.” So don’t be nervous! These Bold Betties had an absolute blast this weekend whitewater rafting down the Wild and Scenic Route of the Clackamas River.
Together they faced challenges, forged new friendships, and hunkered down in the evening for a night of great food, fun games, and settling in to sleep in the biggest 10 person tent you've ever seen!
Thank you to all of these bold ladies for making this a trip to remember!

Summer is almost over folks - although it doesn’t feel like it! ☀️Meet our August Betty of the Month, Angie Schmidt. She’s a gal who loves her four seasons and relishes getting outside and active no matter the weather.🌲🍂❄️🌸 Angie and her feisty pup, Artemis 🐶, first heard about Bold Betties on one of her hikes with PDX Metro Pack Walks, another Meetup group where dogs take their owners hiking around the Portland area. If you have a furbaby, Angie is your go-to gal for hiking and connecting with other canine lovers.

Angie’s first event was almost exactly one year ago at one of our Social meetups where we went bowling and played arcade games at Grand Central 🎳. Her favorite memory with the Betties since bowling is from our Skating Social night. She said, “It was fun to get some history on people and talk about more than just what we do for work.” Angie also adds that “I’ve enjoyed all the hikes, but Coyote Wall was the prettiest/best.”

😁Her advice to new Bold Betties? She says to come with an open mind, especially if your first thought is like most of the women that join Bold Betties who say ‘I don’t normally get along with other women.’ When asked to tell us her story of joining the Betties, she said, “ Well, what intimidated me the most was past experiences with groups of females being clicky and exclusive. Humans will always be humans, but my experiences have been that this group is very accepting and inclusive to all women. ❤️For the past year I have been on a journey to learn how to relate better and support my fellow women, and this group has been a part of showing me how to do that. So I guess my suggestion is to come with an open mind and see what you can learn from this encouraging group of women. Kelsey sets an amazing example of how to see and appreciate each woman in order to cultivate a truly empowering experience.”

You’ll see Angie at our upcoming Whitewater Rafting event this weekend rocking some rapids 💦and lounging by the fire🔥, likely with a big smile and tales of upcoming adventures. This girl is BOLD! 💪💥The next time you see her and Artemis, stop and say hello! 👋
