Today, we had the privilege of attending the unveiling of the new North End mural in the former Little Italy of Portsmouth, and the long-awaited tribute to a neighborhood that once stood in this area dotted with families, businesses, and community.

Standing here, we are reminded once again that history is not just found between the pages. It lives in the memories of those who walked these sidewalks to and from work or school and in the families who will carry those memories forward.

The North End was and has forever changed. Urban renewal was a scary time of uncertainty. More than 400 people were displaced and an entire neighborhood of land was erased from the landscape. But, we are reminded today of the spirit of that community here and now. You can remove buildings, but not the memories.

Today’s mural serves as more than a work of art, it reminds us of the people who called the North End a home. The children who played football in the streets and to the families who built their lives here. The former Little Italy neighborhood is remembered.

As Portsmouth continues to grow and evolve, we won't forget the stories of those who came before us. Their history is Portsmouth’s history.

Thank you to everyone who helped bring this mural to life during the PortsmouthNH400 and a number of families who all continue to share the story of the North End so that it will never be forgotten.

Portsmouth Historical Society

One of the most curious roadside attractions in New Hampshire can be found along Route 3 near Lincoln — an official state historical marker for something far stranger than a battle, a birthplace, or a famous person.

On the night of September 19–20, 1961, Portsmouth couple Betty and Barney Hill were driving south through the White Mountains when they reported a close encounter with an unidentified flying object — and two hours of time they could not account for.

They filed an official Air Force Project Blue Book report the very next day. The story stayed quiet until it leaked to the Boston Traveler in 1965, and what followed made history: the Betty and Barney Hill incident became the first widely reported UFO abduction case in the United States.

New Hampshire later placed an official state historical marker along Route 3 near the stretch of road associated with the incident. Whether you believe it, doubt it, or just love a good roadside mystery, it’s one of the most genuinely fascinating stops in the White Mountains.

And yes, it sits near a wonderfully odd little cluster of roadside Americana — because New Hampshire contains a lot of those.

Save this for your next weird New Hampshire road trip.

The bike is the vehicle. The stories are the experience.

Whether it’s Benjamin Franklin visiting Portsmouth, William Whipple signing the Declaration of Independence, a hidden alleyway, a waterfront warehouse, or a new statue downtown, we’re helping guests see that history isn’t just about the past, it’s about the people who lived it.

Our tours are something more than a sightseeing tour. We don’t tell stories because history happened. We tell stories because history still matters.

Join us as we share these stories. They’re creating memories, inspiring curiosity, and helping our guests and locals fall in love with Portsmouth all over again.

Happy World Bicycle Day! Every turn of the pedal tells a story.

Here on the New Hampshire Seacoast, bicycles do more than move us from place to place they connect us to the people, places, and events that shaped our region. From Revolutionary War heroes and maritime legends to hidden sculptures, historic homes, and unforgettable local characters, history comes alive when experienced with the press of the pedal.

We believe the best way to explore a destination is through storytelling. The sights are memorable, but it’s the stories behind them that transform a simple ride into an experience you’ll never forget.

Today, on World Bicycle Day, we’re celebrating the joy of discovery, the freedom of two wheels, and the power of stories to connect us with the pas and people whowalked before us.

History isn’t just something you read, it’s something you can ride through. Join us and experience the New Hampshire Seacoast one story, one smile, and one pedal stroke at a time.
