As June begins, Portsmouth–Scioto County celebrates in alignment with America250-Ohio’s theme, “Ohio Outdoors: Exploring Ohio’s Natural Resources.”

The region is showcased through the outdoors in action—climbing Copperhead Fire Tower in Shawnee State Forest, kayaking on Turkey Creek Lake and mountain biking in Shawnee State Park, horseback riding with Ben’s Happy Trails, and walking the River Otter Trail at Scioto Brush Creek State Nature Preserve.

From forest canopy views to winding trails and waterways, Portsmouth–Scioto County invites all to experience Ohio’s natural beauty this month.

Grab your gloves 🧤& join the river 🌊 sweep to help keep the Ohio River clean!

Hosted by DJ Geek Techneek, this year’s cleanup effort is shaping up to be the biggest one yet!

📆 Next Sunday, June 7th
🕐 10 AM to 1 PM
📍 Shawnee State Park Marina (Ohio River Campground)

After bringing together 100 volunteers across two events last year and removing hundreds of bags of trash and large debris from the river, the impact reached far beyond Scioto County. The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) reported that cleanup efforts along the Ohio River more than doubled in 2025 — and this community played a major role in making that happen.

This year, volunteers will not only clean the marina area and nearby trails, but also take to the water in kayaks, boats, and other safe floating vessels to remove debris directly from the river. Even bigger news: H2Ohio’s “Queen of Clean” barge will also be on site to help remove larger debris and make an even greater impact.

Community members planning to attend are encouraged to message ahead of time so supplies and free event t-shirts can be prepared.

From volunteers and donations to everyone sharing resources and connections, every contribution helps make this community effort possible.

Let’s come together once again and make a difference for Scioto County’s waterways! 🙌🌎

America250-Ohio’s May theme is “Ohio Creates: Arts, Culture, and Literature” — and of course, with a theme like that, it’s impossible not to talk about the Portsmouth Floodwall Murals. 🎨🇺🇸

Stretching along the Ohio River, the murals transform Portsmouth’s floodwall into a massive outdoor art gallery filled with larger-than-life scenes that capture the history, culture, and spirit of southern Ohio. From riverboats and railroads to local heroes and everyday life, each panel tells a story that helped shape the region.

Want to make the experience even more interactive? Download the FREE Portsmouth Murals app on the Apple App Store or Google Play before visiting! The app features audio narration and video clips that bring each mural panel and its story to life throughout the tour. 🎧📱
