Our students are embracing the motto of PURA VIDA on their current adventure but what exactly does it mean? 🤔💭🇨🇷🤷

In Costa Rica, “Pura Vida” translates literally to “pure life,” but culturally it is a national motto and a way of living. It represents a philosophy of gratitude, community, and peace, reflecting a relaxed, optimistic outlook that encourages letting go of stress and embracing life’s simple moments.

Locals (known as Ticos) use the phrase in almost every aspect of daily life:

As a Greeting/Farewell: It can be used interchangeably for “hello” or “goodbye”.

As an Answer: When asked “¿Cómo estás?” (How are you?), responding with “Pura Vida” means everything is great or wonderful.

To Show Appreciation: Use it to express thankfulness for a meal, a beautiful view, or a kind gesture.

To Brush Off Negativity: If you miss a bus or have a minor inconvenience, saying “Pura Vida” is a way to say “everything is alright, it’s not a big deal”.

The concept is deeply tied to the country’s peaceful nature and focus on sustainability, acting as a gentle reminder to slow down, be present, and enjoy life.
