Mount Beacon - Nowadays, Mount Beacon is a popular destination among outdoor enthusiasts seeking a challenging hike with stunning views of the Hudson River and its surrounding highlands. During the Revolutionary War, appropriately named Mount Beacon was the northernmost site in a series of signal fires at high points along the Hudson. The Mount Beacon signal fire was used to alert General George Washington, who was camped across the river in Newburgh with the Continental Army, of any movements by the British. The Daughters of the Revolution dedicated a monument atop Mount Beacon on July 4, 1900, and that monument can still be seen today by anyone who makes the mile-or-so climb to the top of the mountain.

The Beekman Arms and Delamater Inn - America’s Oldest Continuously Operated Inn has, in fact, been serving as an inn since before America was even a country. William Traphagen established a traveler's inn, the Traphagen Tavern, at the crossroads in the town of Ryn Beck in 1704. The Beekman Arms was added to the original tavern in 1766 and the establishment has been going strong ever since. Mark the calendars for July 25 for a celebration of their 260th anniversary (along with America's 250th), which will feature a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence, stories by Jonathan the Storyteller - Hudson Valley's Jonathan Kruk and music + military demonstrations by The 5th New York Regiment . Followed by fireworks at Dutchess County Fairgrounds at 7.

During the Revolutionary War, the Fourth Regiment of the Continental Army performed drills on the front lawn of the Bogardus Tavern, as it was then known. Distinguished guests in those days included George Washington, Philip Schuyler, Benedict Arnold, Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. Nowadays, this charming inn in the heart of the Village of Rhinebeck offers travelers a choice of 80 beautiful rooms in several different historic buildings. The on-site restaurant, The Tavern at the Beekman Arms and its Colonial Tap Room, serves lunch and dinner seven days a week and Sunday brunch.

Oblong Friends Meeting House - The first settler on Quaker Hill in Pawling was Nathan Birdsall, a surveyor and a Quaker. Others of his faith soon joined him, and together they established a thriving farming community; they erected their meeting house in 1764. You will find it exactly as it looked back then with its rows of wooden benches, wall partitions on pulley systems, and mezzanine viewing level. This is one of the stops on the 2026 Dutchess County Quaker Meeting House Tour: visit on June 14, July 12, September 13, October 11, and November 8. Juneteenth, the annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, honors a major turning point in the centuries-long effort to insure justice and equality for all in America. There are many examples of people who have heroically championed this cause through the years — including several right here in Dutchess County, from the Abolitionist Movement through the Civil Rights Movement.
