Her name was Celia Ann “Mattie” Earp — a woman once entwined with one of the most enduring legends of the American West.

She shared her life for a time with Wyatt Earp during the turbulent years in Tombstone, when the gunfire of the O.K. Corral echoed through history. But when Wyatt rode on toward fame and fortune, Mattie’s path turned down a lonelier road.

Far from the headlines and heroics, Mattie’s story ended quietly in a desert mining town near Superior, Arizona. Today, her grave sits under the open sky, marked only by a simple stone and the whispers of time.

Her story is one of love, loss, and the forgotten women who helped shape the myth of the West.
