If you’re driving Arizona’s Route 66, don’t blow right past Peach Springs. 👀

Grand Canyon Caverns sits right along the historic route and makes for one of the more unusual stops, with tours taking visitors about 200 feet underground.

And if you have an extra day, Peach Springs also makes a good jumping-off point for Grand Canyon West and the Skywalk. Just plan for it: Grand Canyon West is roughly a two-hour drive from Peach Springs, so it’s definitely a detour, not a quick side stop.

Coal Mine Canyon is one of those places that really shows off how varied Northern Arizona can be.

Located southeast of Tuba City on the Navajo Nation, the canyon is known for its colorful rock layers, hoodoos, and dramatic erosion patterns.

One important thing to know before planning a visit: access is on tribal land, so visitors should check current Navajo Nation rules and permit requirements before heading out.

Looking for a late-summer day trip near Flagstaff? Add Walnut Canyon to the list. 🌲

The Island Trail takes you down into Walnut Canyon past 25 cliff-dwelling rooms built into the canyon walls. It’s only about a mile round trip, but don’t let the distance fool you. The climb back out is steep, and the park sits around 7,000 feet in elevation.

One of Arizona’s coolest natural landmarks is just outside Payson!

Tonto Natural Bridge State Park is home to what’s believed to be the largest natural travertine bridge in the world, rising about 183 feet above Pine Creek.

You can take in the view from above or hike down into the canyon for a closer look. Just know before you go: the trails are short, but they’re also steep and strenuous.

Flagstaff fun fact: Arizona’s highest point is right here. 🏔️

Humphreys Peak rises to 12,633 feet in the San Francisco Peaks just north of Flagstaff.

And if reaching the top is on your bucket list, know before you go: Humphreys Trail is rated strenuous and climbs more than 3,400 feet to the summit.

Definitely a hike to prepare for, not a casual afternoon stroll.

100 years of Route 66 -

Route 66 was officially designated in 1926, which means the Mother Road is celebrating its centennial this year.

Northern Arizona played a big part in that story, with the highway passing through towns like Holbrook, Winslow, Flagstaff, Williams and Seligman. And places like Holbrook still have plenty of the vintage roadside signs and architecture that make exploring the old route so fun.

Fun fact: Montezuma had nothing to do with Montezuma Castle.

This five-story cliff dwelling near Camp Verde was built by the people archaeologists refer to as the Sinagua, or Hisatsinom, beginning around the 1100s.

In fact, the site had already been unoccupied for decades by the time Aztec emperor Montezuma II was born. Early settlers mistakenly associated the structure with him, and the name stuck.

Today, a short paved loop takes visitors past the dwelling, where you can get a pretty incredible look at a structure that has stood for centuries.
